“Culture Helps / Культура допомагає” is an EU co-funded project aimed at assisting people who have been forced to move to safer regions of Ukraine or abroad because of russian full-scale war against Ukraine. The project provides grant support to cultural managers and organisations that help displaced people integrate into new communities through culture. “Culture Helps” focus on (displaced) cultural professionals and organisations that can enable this process. Implemented by Insha Osvita (UA) and zusa (DE).
“Culture helps / Культура допомагає” launched it first round of grant calls during May-June 2023. Both individual and project grant calls received more than 500 applications, which were evaluated through nomination by Insha Osvita jury members. In regards to this, the pool of the jury, who can work on the evaluation of the next calls for individual and project grants need to be extended. You can join the team, evaluating applications for individual or project grants, or both types of grants.
The Individual grants program focuses on support of mental health of сultural workers and activists, working with people who have been forced to move to safer regions of Ukraine or Creative Europe countries because of russia’s war against Ukraine, can receive financial support to take care of their mental health or wellbeing (e.g., a psychotherapist sessions course, a health resort stay, an art therapy course, etc.). The program aims to draw attention to the importance of mental health in cultural managers’ work.
Facts on evaluation of Individual grants program:
- 1 application is evaluated by 3 jury members.
- Each jury member works independently in a separate Excel spreadsheet, evaluating applications according to criteria, described in the call.
- Dates of evaluation from August 3-28, 2023.
- Language of the application: Ukrainian or English.
- We expect 50-65 applications for 1 jury member. The general volume of the text of one application is around 1 page, A4 format.
- Information on jury members is communicated publicly on Insha Osvita’s and zusa’s webpages and social media.
- Evaluators’ fee is 4000 UAH.
The project grants program offers support for cultural organisations that emphasise work with people, who have been forced to move to safer regions of Ukraine or Creative Europe countries because of russia’s war against Ukraine. The project idea must be focused on displaced people or refugees, facilitation of their integration into new contexts through culture. Additional efforts should be put into involving particularly families and children in the project activities. The proposed activities can have a form of workshops, co-creation processes, educational projects, art therapy or similar.
Facts on evaluation of project grants program:
- 1 application is evaluated by a board of 3 jury members.
- Each jury member works independently in a separate Excel spreadsheet, evaluating applications according to criteria, described in the call.
- Dates of evaluation: starting in November 2023 (final dates TBA closer to the date).
- Language of the application: Ukrainian or English.
- We expect 50–65 applications for 1 jury member. The general volume of the applications is around 5 pages A4.
- Information on jury members is communicated publicly on Insha Osvita’s and zusa’s webpage and social media.
- Evaluators’ fee is 4000 UAH.
Qualification, skills and experience required from jury members:
- Strong connections with the cultural community: professionals in the field of cultural management.
- Experience in cultural management, management in the NGO sector or independent artists initiatives.
- Experience in writing project applications.
- Understanding of project and/or cultural management processes and impacts of implementing projects to the cultural sector and target group in Culture helps program.
- Ukrainian and English language level should be no lower than B1.
Application and timeline:

- Applications need to be submitted only in English.
- The list of jury for both types of grant calls will be announced not later than July 27, 2023.
